Abstract

Des son premier roman Deuils cannibales et mélancoliques (2000), Catherine Mavrikakis a partie liée avec le theme de la mort. Elle se déploie a travers son oeuvre qu’il s’agisse de Fleurs de crachat (2005), du Ciel de Bay City (2008), d’Omaha Beach (2008) ou des Derniers jours de Smokey Nelson (2011). Elle est présente aussi dans son récit autobiographique Ce qui restera (2017). Le roman Oscar de Profundis (2016) ne fait pas exception sauf que cette fois la mort n’est plus celle des individus – amis et parents – mais bien celle de la civilisation qui n’a plus d’avenir. La trame romanesque a pour terreau culturel les antécédents dystopiques de George Orwell (1984) et de Ray Bradbury (Fahrenheit 451), mais elle est fortement inspirée par la décadence représentée par Charles Baudelaire, Oscar Wilde et surtout la figure de Jean Floressas des Esseintes de Joris-Karl Huysmans dont le protagoniste mavrikakissien Oscar de Profundis est une réincarnation. Le Montréal de 2084 se métamorphose en symbole de la lutte désespérée pour la sauvegarde des valeurs civilisationnelles – dignité, humanité, culture - condamnées a disparaître. Le chapitre tente de cerner les spécificités du récit dystopique dans ses composantes et sa transcendance philosophique.

Od svého prvního románu Deuils cannibales et mélancoliques (2000) je Catherine Mavrikakis úzce spjata s tématem smrti, jež se jako červená nit vine celým dílem: Fleurs de crachat (2005), Ciel de Bay City (2008), Omaha Beach (2008), Derniers jours de Smokey Nelson (2011), Ce qui restera (2017). Román Oscar de Profundis (2016) není výjimkou, kromě toho, že tentokrát již smrt není smrtí jednotlivců - přátel a příbuzných - ale smrtí civilizace, která nemá budoucnost. Zápletka vyrůzstá z dystopické tvorby George Orwella (1984) a Ray Bradburyho (Fahrenheit 451), ale je také silně inspirována dekadencí představovanou Charlesem Baudelaireem, Oscarem Wildem a zejména postavou Jeana Floressas des Esseintes Jorise-Karle Huysmanse, jehož je Mavrikakissin protagonista Oscar de Profundis reinkarnací. Montreal z roku 2084 se transformuje do symbolu zoufalého boje za ochranu civilizačních hodnot - důstojnosti, lidskosti, kultury - odsouzených k zániku. Kapitola se pokouší identifikovat specifika dystopického příběhu v jeho složkách a jeho filozofickou transcendenci.

From her first novel Deuils cannibales et mélancoliques (2000), Catherine Mavrikakis has been linked with the theme of death. It unfolds through his work: Fleurs de crachat (2005), Ciel de Bay City (2008), Omaha Beach (2008), Derniers jours de Smokey Nelson (2011), Ce qui restera (2017). The novel Oscar de Profundis (2016) is no exception except that this time the death is no longer that of individuals - friends and relatives - but rather that of civilization without no future. The plot has for cultural breeding ground the dystopian antecedents of George Orwell (1984) and Ray Bradbury (Fahrenheit 451), but it is strongly inspired by the decadence represented by Charles Baudelaire, Oscar Wilde and especially the figure of Jean Floressas des Esseintes by Joris-Karl Huysmans whose Oscar de Profundis is a reincarnation. The Montreal of 2084 is transformed into a symbol of the desperate struggle to safeguard civilizational values - dignity, humanity, culture - condemned to disappear. The chapter attempts to identify the specificities of the dystopian narrative in its components and its philosophical transcendence.
