Abstract (in English)
For many centuries, the rituals have been the essence of Udmurt's spiritual culture. Their ceremonial customs combine elements of the traditional pagan faith and Orthodox Christianity, which took root in their area due to forced Christianization after the annexation of the Volga region to the Grand Duchy of Moscow. The rituals do not have a uniform course; significant differences may appear at the level of individual villages. This paper focuses on the component that unites the Udmurts, regardless of geographical location and their affiliation to ancestral groups, the so-called vyzhy. This unifying factor is beer (sur in Udmurt), which was served not only as a stimulating drink for the participants in the ceremonies but also had a deep, magical function that made it possible to establish a dialogue with the world of ancestors and gods. We aim to draw attention to the important role of beer as one of the determining bearers of the Udmurt ethnic culture, based on the study of ceremonies and rituals of the calendar cycle.
