Abstract

The Prague Spring and its quashing by soviet tanks was not only an important event in Czech and Slovak national history; it also had a wider, global reach. It is no surprise, then, that the Prague Spring of 1968 is one of the best known and most thoroughly researched events in Czechoslovak history. It seems only appropriate, therefore, especially following the fiftieth anniversary of the event in 2018, to establish the current “state of play”. The essay does not seek to provide a complete list of works concerning the Prague Spring and the occupation of 1968 – such a task would be impossible. Instead, the essay focuses on the most significant works and seek to capture and analyse the main trends in the research into and writing about this event. It focuses on the Western historiography – especially works written in English – as that contribution to the scholarship is the most numerous and, arguably, the most influential. It also pays brief attention to the work of German, Italian and French historians.

Abstract (in Czech)

Pražské jaro a jeho potlačení sovětskými tanky nebylo jen důležitou událostí v českých a slovenských národních dějinách, mělo také širší význam a globální dosah. Není tedy žádným překvapením, že Pražské jaro 1968 je jednou z nejznámějších a nejdůkladněji prozkoumaných událostí v československých dějinách. Zdá se tedy jen vhodné, zejména po padesátém výročí události v roce 2018, prozkoumat současný „aktuální stav bádání“. Cílem práce není poskytnout úplný seznam prací týkajících se Pražského jara a okupace roku 1968 - takový úkol by byl nemožný. Místo toho se esej zaměřuje na nejvýznamnější díla a snaží se zachytit a analyzovat hlavní trendy ve výzkumu a psaní o této události. Zaměřuje se na západní historiografii – zejména na práce psané v angličtině - protože jejich příspěvek k našemu poznáné této události je nejpočetnější a pravděpodobně i nejvlivnější. Krátce také věnuje pozornost práci německých, italských a francouzských historiků.
