“Who established Germans judges over the nations?”, asked 1160 John of Salisbury in one of his letters and in following years criticizes “German tyrant”, emperor Frederick I Barbarossa (1152-1190). Was his criticism on “Germans” unique? Moreover, who were those “Germans”, he criticized so severely? And what do different techniques of “othering” tell about identifications of those medieval historians, who used them? In this paper, in the first step, focus will be on the image of “Theutonici” in selected Bohemian high medieval historiographical sources. Second, these imaging of “Theutonici” will be contextualized within differing strategies of identifications of individual medieval historians. This will become an important stepping stone for understanding differing definitions of belonging to the ethnic group, which developed to an argument within the debates among the different social groups in medieval Czech lands.

"Kdo ustanovil Němce soudci nad národy?", ptá se v jednom ze svých dopisů Jan ze Salisbury a v následujících letech kritizuje "německého tyrana", císaře Fridricha I. Barbarossu (1152-1190). Byla jeho kritika na adresu "Němců" ojedinělá? Navíc, kdo byli ti "Němci", které tak tvrdě kritizoval? A co vypovídají různé techniky "jinakosti" o identifikaci těch středověkých historiků, kteří je používali? V tomto článku se v prvním kroku zaměříme na obraz "Theutonici" ve vybraných českých vrcholně středověkých historiografických pramenech. Za druhé bude toto zobrazování "Theutonici" kontextualizováno v rámci odlišných identifikačních strategií jednotlivých středověkých historiků. To se stane důležitým odrazovým můstkem pro pochopení rozdílných definic příslušnosti k etnické skupině, které se rozvinuly do sporu v rámci debat mezi jednotlivými společenskými skupinami v českých středověkých zemích.
