Abstract

This paper presents a case study of an EAP curriculum at an EMI HE institution in Zlín, Czech Republic. The aim of the programme is to meet the Academic English learning needs of both Czech L1 and international L2 English learners enrolled in the Bachelor´s, Masters and PhD study programmes. Zlín has a strong tradition in industrial research and design due to the long-term presence in the city of the Bata shoe company, which has subsequently attracted creative industries such as film production, fashion, graphic and digital design. The university’s course offerings are therefore global and local: they are aimed at Czech students who are either working or intending to work in industrial product design, and are also global in outlook since they attract students from European, African and Asian countries, all taught through the medium of English. The main aim of the presentation is thus to provide an overview of how the EAP programmes meet academic English needs of such a glocally diverse L2 student base. It describes how EAP provision, delivered within the Faculty of Multimedia Communications, extends across five university faculties and will be illustrated with examples from the lessons on writing and speaking. Curriculum which was developed to increase awareness in academic writing style is content-specific.

Abstract (in Czech)

Tento příspěvek bude prezentovat výsledky řešení kurikula pro EAP na instituci terciárního vzdělávání ve Zlíně, České republice. Cílem programu je naplnit potřeby vzdělávání v oblasti EAP pro české a mezinárodní studenty v bakalářských, magisterských a doktorských studijních programech. Ve Zlíně je silná tradice v oblasti průmyslového výzkumu a průmyslového designu, a to vzhledem k dlouhodobé přítomnosti firmy Baťa, která následně dala příčinu vzniku kreativních průmyslů a designu: filmový, oděvní, grafický a digitální. Nabídka univerzitních předmětů EAP je tedy globální i lokální, zaměřena na místní i zahraniční studenty. Hlavním cílem prezentace je poskytnout přehled EAP programů a jejich naplnění potřeby akademické angličtiny pro glokálně rozmanitou studentskou základnu. Zajištění výuky EAP na Fakultě multimediálních komunikací bude doplněno do kontextu výuky EAP na dalších fakultách univerzity. Budou předvedeny příklady z výuky, které procvičují dovednost psaní a mluvení. Kurikulum, které bylo vyvinuto specificky pro potřeby studentů FMK je zacíleno na konkrétní odborný obsah a na dovednosti psaní a mluvení.
