Abstract
The talk is concentrated on two metaphors that are usually connected with scientific progress. The first metaphor is the image of the father Time and his daughter – Truth. The second metaphor is the metaphor of dwarves on the shoulders of giants. These metaphors are often quoted as an expression of the Renaissance or early modern belief in the progress of knowledge. In my talk, I want to show that the meaning of metaphors was more complex, and it changed over time.
