Abstract

A partir dos livros A invenção da Amazônia (1994), da pesquisadora brasileira Neide Gondim, e Mad Maria, romance de Márcio Souza (1980), procuramos expor a complexidade da construção da realidade amazônica no campo da literatura. Gondim mostra a formação do imaginário amazônico a partir do olhar dos viajantes europeus, apontando o contraste com a maneira como viviam os nativos. O registro de autores estrangeiros oscila entre fantasias, utopias e preconceitos e entre pesquisas científicas sérias nos campos de etnologia e ciências naturais, influenciando obras sobre a região com foco no exótico. Este olhar sobre a Amazonia vigente no contexto internacional até hoje diverge profundamente da identidade criada pelos autores locais, sobretudo a partir da década de trinta do século vinte, focada nos problemas sociais, econômicos e políticos. De exemplo vai nos servir o romance Mad Maria, uma crítica à exploração da região e do trabalho humano, à dizimação dos povos indígenas, à corrupção e ao cinismo de empresários e políticos que acompanharam a construção da ferrovia Madeira-Mamoré (1907-1912).

Abstract (in Czech)

Na základě knih A invenção da Amazônia (Smyšlená Amazonie, 1994) od brazilské badatelky Neide Gondim a Mad Maria (Bláznivá Marie, 1980), románu Marcia Souzy, se snažíme představit komplexitu konstrukce amazonské reality na poli literatury. Gondim analyzuje formování fantazií o Amazonii zdokumentované v textech evropských cestovatelů a poukazuje na kontrast se skutečným způsobem života domorodých kultur. Jejich písemná svědectví oscilují mezi fantazií, utopií a předsudky na straně jedné, a mezi seriózními vědeckými výzkumy v oblasti etnologie a přírodních věd na straně druhé. Oba přístupy ovlivňují exotický přístup k oblasti v dílech světové literatury. Tento pohled na Amazonii, který je v mezinárodním prostředí platný dodnes, se hluboce odklání od identity vytvořené místními autory, kteří píší svá díla zejména od třicátých let dvacátého století a orientují se na problémy sociální, ekonomické a politické. Takovým příkladem je román Mad Maria, který je kritikou nekontrolovaného využívání oblasti k ekonomickým účelům, zneužívání lidských zdrojů, vyvražďování domorodých obyvatel, korupce a cynismu podnikatelů a politiků, kteří se podíleli na stavbě železnice Madiera-Mamoré (1907-1912).

Abstract (in English)

From the books A Invenção da Amazônia (1994), by the Brazilian researcher Neide Gondim, and Mad Maria, a novel by Márcio Souza (1980), we seek to expose the complexity of the construction of the Amazonian reality in the field of literature. Gondim shows the formation of the Amazonian imaginary from the point of view of European travelers, pointing out the contrast with the way the natives lived. The record of foreign authors oscillates between fantasies, utopias and prejudices and between serious scientific research in the fields of ethnology and natural sciences, influencing works on the region with a focus on the exotic. This view of the Amazon, prevailing in the international context until today, diverges deeply from the identity created by local authors, especially from the thirties of the twentieth century, focused on social, economic and political problems. An example will be the novel Mad Maria, a critique of the exploitation of the region and human work, the decimation of indigenous peoples, the corruption and cynicism of entrepreneurs and politicians who accompanied the construction of the Madeira-Mamoré railroad (1907-1912).
