Abstract
The contribution aimed to present the author's research on the topic of the 19th-century Western travel accounts in Armenia, with the purpose of analyzing the type of looks that were conveyed in the reports. In the first section was introduced the list of the travel accounts chosen by father Alishan – of the Mekhitarist Congregation of San Lazzaro – in order to present Armenia at the Third International Geographical Conference in Venice, 1881. The contribution continued with the analysis of the Western travellers, with a focus on their perception of the Medieval heritage of Armenia. The last section of the presentation was dedicated to the few accounts of the Italian travellers to the southern Caucasus, in particular, the 1862 travel and photographic campaign endorsed by the Italian government.
