The paper focuses on the enciphered correspondence exchanged between the imperial court and the Gonzaga family of Mantua at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. On the basis of the material preserved in the Gonzaga archive, the forms of preservation and the modalities of use of ciphers are presented.
