Abstract

The aim of this paper is to research and analyse the portrayal of various illnesses and diseases in the work of Plautus. The work consists of complete analysis of all comedies of Plautus and tries to answer the following research questions: How often the sick character appears in Plautus´ plays? Which illnesses are mentioned the most often? Can the certain known illnesses be identified by the list of symptoms Plautus provides? Is it more common to portray some character archetypes as being sick than the others and if so, why? The secondary aim of this paper is to research what is the reason to include the sick character or to mention the illness and how the mentioned illnesses compare to known diseases of the time or even today. Lastly the paper will also touch on the comedic aspects of the illness.

Abstract (in Czech)

Cílem tohoto příspěvku je prozkoumat a analyzovat zobrazení různých nemocí a chorob v Plautově díle. Práce se skládá z kompletní analýzy všech Plautových komedií a snaží se odpovědět na následující výzkumné otázky: Jak často se v Plautových hrách objevuje nemocná postava? Které nemoci jsou zmiňovány nejčastěji? Lze podle výčtu příznaků, které Plautus uvádí, identifikovat některé známé nemoci? Jsou některé archetypy postav častěji zobrazovány jako nemocné než jiné, a pokud ano, proč? Sekundárním cílem této práce je prozkoumat, co je důvodem k zařazení nemocné postavy nebo ke zmínce o nemoci a jak jsou zmíněné nemoci srovnatelné se známými nemocemi té doby nebo i současnosti. V neposlední řadě se příspěvek dotkne také komediálních aspektů nemoci.
