Abstract

As we know, musical culture is closely linked to social change, but this link may not always be readily apparent. An interesting example is the development of brass band music in the territory of today's Czech Republic. At first, in the form of military brass bands, these musical ensembles fulfilled an utilitarian function which was standard in Europe at the time. However, in the environment of the national movement of the 19th century, brass music reached the status of a national force in the Czech environment, and in the first half of the 20th century it became synonymous with a new musical genre that was extremely popular in the Czechlands (Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia) - the so-called lidovky. After the onset of communist cultural policy, in February 1948, the popularity of brass band music declined, but it was sustained through the monopoly broadcasting media (radio and television). With the development of music education, agradual qualitative rebirth, especially of smaller rural brass bands performing repertoire inspired by folk music, was apparent. The abolition of all social restrictions and censorship in the cultural sphere, which occurred after 1989, also changed the conditions under which brass bands have been functioning. The transformation of society also caused changes in musical tastes, which resulted in a further decline in the popularity of brass band music throughout society. During its development, however, brass band music remained a part of the rural everyday culture in some regions of the Czech Republic. Today, it has a stable and strong position, especially in the ethnographic region of Slovácko, where it appears as an integral part of traditional local festivals. It also has a concert function prevalent not only in the Czech Republic, but especially abroad.

Jak víme, hudební kultura úzce souvisí se sociálními změnami, ale tato souvislost nemusí být vždy zřejmá. Zajímavým příkladem je vývoj dechové hudby na území dnešní České republiky. Zpočátku plnila tato hudební tělesa v podobě vojenských dechových kapel utilitární funkci, která byla v tehdejší Evropě standardní. V prostředí národního hnutí 19. století však dechová hudba dosáhla v českém prostředí postavení národní síly a v první polovině 20. století se stala synonymem nového hudebního žánru, který byl v Čechách (Čechy, Morava, Slezsko) mimořádně populární - tzv. lidovky. Po nástupu komunistické kulturní politiky v únoru 1948 popularita dechovky poklesla, ale udržovala se díky monopolnímu vysílání médií (rozhlasu a televize). S rozvojem hudebního školství byl patrný kvalitativní přerod agrárních kapel, zejména menších venkovských dechovek hrajících repertoár inspirovaný lidovou hudbou. Zrušení všech společenských omezení a cenzury v kulturní sféře, k němuž došlo po roce 1989, změnilo i podmínky, v nichž dechové kapely fungovaly. Transformace společnosti způsobila také změny hudebního vkusu, které měly za následek další pokles obliby dechové hudby v celé společnosti. Během svého vývoje však dechová hudba zůstala v některých regionech České republiky součástí venkovské každodenní kultury. Dnes má stabilní a silné postavení zejména v národopisné oblasti Slovácko, kde se objevuje jako nedílná součást tradičních místních slavností. Má také koncertní funkci rozšířenou nejen v České republice, ale zejména v zahraničí.
