Publikace je prezentací výzkumných aktivit projektu a povahou plní funkci výzkumné zprávy o tematických perspektivách a výsledcích projektu. Kniha je založena na zkušenostech kolektivu autorů s digitalizací zvukového dědictví. Zachycuje snahu autorů prozkoumat a zdokumentovat stav, v němž se nachází zvukové nosiče v paměťových institucích a v soukromém vlastnictví, formovat strategie pro jeho systematickou ochranu, včetně metodik popisu, konzervování zdrojů a digitalizace, pro záchranu degradací nejvíce ohrožených zvukových pramenů a pro zpřístupnění zvukového kulturního dědictví vědecké i široké veřejnosti k dalšímu využití. Obsah knihy je organizován dle modelu pracovního postupu projektu Nový fonograf, popisujícího cestu zvukového kulturního artefaktu do digitálních sbírek paměťových institucí v několika fázích: evidence, ochrana, fotografování, katalogizace, digitalizace, správa dat, zpřístupnění, vývoj, vzdělání. Autoři jednotlivých kapitol se věnují oblastem, v nichž se v praxi setkávají s nejvíce problémy a jejichž řešení považují za stěžejní vzhledem k cílům identifikace existujících zvukových nosičů a záchrany těch, které jsou nejvíce ohroženy. Jednotlivé kapitoly knihy jsou věnovány průzkumu a evidenci zvukových záznamů, ochraně a správě zvukových dat, digitálním formátům pro archivaci zvukového záznamu, formám zpřístupňování zvukového dědictví, využití zvukových záznamů ve vědecké práci a technickým perspektivám digitalizace zvukového dědictví.

The publication is a presentation of the research activities of the project and by nature fulfills the function of a research report on the thematic perspectives and results of the project. The book is based on the experience of a team of authors with the digitization of sound heritage. It captures the authors' efforts to examine and document the state of sound recordings in memory institutions and in private ownership, to formulate strategies for their systematic preservation, including methodologies for description, preservation of sources and digitization, to save the most endangered sound sources, and to make sound cultural heritage accessible to the scientific and general public for further use. The content of the book is organized according to the New Phonograph Project workflow model, describing the journey of sound cultural artifacts to digital collections of memory institutions in several stages: registration, preservation, taking photographs, cataloging, digitizing, data managing, accessing, developing, educating. The authors of each chapter address the areas where they encounter the most problems in practice and which they consider central to the goals of identifying existing sound media and preserving those most at risk. Individual chapters of the book are devoted to: exploration and identification of sound recordings, preservation and management of sound data, digital formats for archiving sound recordings, forms of access to sound heritage, the use of digital sound recordings in scholarly work, and technical perspectives on the digitization of sound heritage.
