Abstract
The study focuses on the anchoring effect and its impact on willingness to contribute to the public good. Specifically, it compares the effects on the two types of donors - regular and one-off donors. The results, which are based on a field experiment with Médecins Sans Frontières donors, are in line with the available literature (Doob & McLaughlin, 1987, Schibrowsky & Peltier, 1995, De Bruyn & Prokopec, 2013, Desmet, 1999) in terms of the effect of amounts on willingness to donate. However, the groups tested (regular and irregular donors) show different behaviors. The results confirm the intuitive assumption, also discussed by De Bruyn & Prokopec (2013), that rare donors will be affected by the anchoring effect to a greater extent, as regular donors know better their "ideal amount" they are willing to donate.
