Polypharmacy in medicine and pharmacy refers to the prescribing, administration or use of more medicines. The authors of the contribution focus on the etymology and meaning of this term, its equivalents and the occurrence of these terms in professional pharmaceutical/medical literature. The basic concepts of the definition of this term and attempts on its quantification are presented.
