Jahrhundert, also kurz nach den Teilungen der polnisch-litauischen Adelsrepublik, bisher kaum berücksichtigt. In Litauen konnte dieses Thema während des wechselhaften 20. Jahrhunderts kaum behandelt werden. Wie veränderte sich die politische Kultur in Litauen nach der Inkorporation der Gebiete in das russische Imperium? Die aus Litauen stammende Historikerin Halina Beresnevičiūtė-Nosálová, die seit vielen Jahren an der Universität in Brünn lehrt, zeigt in der vorliegenden, im Original 1999 erschienenen Studie auf, welche Veränderungen sich im politischen Bewusstsein der litauischen Oberschicht in den ersten drei Jahrzehnten der Abhängigkeit vom russischen Zaren vollzogen haben. Die Autorin wählt dafür einen literarischen Ausgangspunkt. Sie beschreibt ausführlich den historischen Kontext der populären politischen Kultur, in der Adam Mickiewicz seine Poeme „Grażyna" (1823) und „Konrad Wallenrod" (1828) verfasste. Diese Werke werden als Manifeste des Aufstands bezeichnet, denn in ihnen forderte der Dichter dazu auf, alle Gefühle der politischen Loyalität in den Dienst des Patriotismus zu stellen. Sie verbreiteten ein Gedankengut, das Gegenbewegungen zu der hierarchischen Verbindung feudaler Loyalität mit familiären Werten auslöste. Die Autorin geht von der These aus, dass sich während der ersten drei Dekaden des 19. Jahrhunderts im politischen Bewusstsein des litauischen Adels ein starkes Gebot der Priorität der Nation innerhalb der Hierarchie der politischen Werte herausgebildet habe, das fortan den Bruch mit allen anderen Loyalitäten legitimierte. Fußend auf Egodokumenten, politischen Schriften, Dichtungen und der zeitgenössischen Wilnaer Presse rekonstruiert, beschreibt und erläutert Beresnevičiutė-Nosálová in ihrem Werk den Wandel des politischen Bewusstseins unter dem litauischen Adel sowie seine Visionen, wobei sie vor allem Wert auf die Analyse der zeitgenössischen politischen Rhetorik legt.
