KW - code-switching, pop culture, social media, Spanish, English UR - https://mla.confex.com/mla/2023/meetingapp.cgi/Session/15414 N2 - The present paper focuses on mapping the trends of a selection of examples of code-switching, code-mixing, and other forms of linguistic contact, that appear as hashtags used on the internet. Three social media platforms will be used for the data collection and comparison: Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, and the data will be collected in monthly intervals over 12 months. The selected hashtags originate from song lyrics of Latino artists producing their work in the U.S. Even though their artistic creations are mainly in Spanish, the used language is often marked by English and by living, residing, or producing in areas where the two languages are in constant contact, which leads to a variety of linguistic phenomena. Quantitative data research and descriptive statistics will be used to evaluate the trends and determine which expressions are relatively short-lived and which have the potential to form part of the standardized vocabulary.
