This is a form of citation is the most transparent form of intertextuality in academic discourse. The decision to use another writer’s words to convey that message instead of indirect referencing (i.e., paraphrasing) is done to fulfil a particular rhetorical function which acts in tandem with the function of the embedded citation. This presentation outlines the unique functions of direct quotation and shows how they are used in source-based writing. This is followed up with applications for teaching the functions to undergraduate students so they can make their own writing more effective. Information regarding the effect of direct quotation on reader comprehension, text cohesion, and writer argumentation are also discussed. ER -
