Abstract
New lectins with potentially interesting and useful properties could be found by bioinformatics research, using similarity to known lectins, or by detection and isolation from the natural source. Searching for exploitable lectins in natural sources is a high-risk project, however, with a relatively simple methodology. Therefore, these projects are suitable for young students with an interest in science but with limited experience with the laboratory practice. The projects proved to be particularly fitting for secondary school students involved in Students` Professional Activities (SPA), a traditional national contest organized by the National pedagogical institute of the Czech Republic.
