Since time immemorial, people have endeavoured to face diseases, risks, and various dangers in life and to protect themselves by magical means. Diseases, childbirth, poisonous animals, wars, and natural disasters could jeopardize or even quickly end a human life. For the people in Roman times the world was full of visible or invisible dangers. An ancient Graeco-Roman amulet can be defined as “a small protective device usually worn on the body to guard against unwanted supernatural influences, such as daemonic attacks and ghostly visitations, or to provide protection and healing from specific diseases and illnesses.

Od nepaměti se lidé snažili čelit nemocem, rizikům a různým životním nebezpečím a chránit se před nimi magickými prostředky. Nemoci, porod, jedovatá zvířata, války a přírodní katastrofy mohly ohrozit nebo dokonce rychle ukončit lidský život. Pro lidi v v antice byl svět plný viditelných či neviditelných nebezpečí. Antické amulety lze definovat jako "malé ochranné předměty“, které se obvykle nosily na těle a měly majitele chránit před nežádoucími nadpřirozenými vlivy, jako jsou útoky démonů a duchů, nebo poskytovat ochranu před určitými.
