I used longitudinal social network analysis to examine the effects of social selection and peer influence through friendship ties on the literacy of lower-secondary students, controlling for students' SES, gender, and network structure. The sample comprised 276 sixth-grade students across twelve classrooms, measured at two time points: the beginning and the end of a school year. I found no evidence for selection or influence, nor did I find evidence of the impact of students' SES on friendships or literacy. Additionally, I found no evidence for a moderating role of classroom ability composition on selection and influence. I discussed my findings in relation to potential publication bias in previous literature and provided implications for future research. ER -
