Za těchto podmínek je obtížné představit si dobu, kdy barva byla výsostně materiálním, kulturním a společenským objektem. Cílem této knihy je ukázat, že barva je a byla ústředním „kulturním objektem“ v dějinách umění, což je skutečnost, která byla nejprve objasněna na základě historické diskuze o tomto fenoménu v jazyce, teologii, vědě a filozofii. Po přehledu středověkých estetických debat se autor knihy zaměřuje na dvě stěžejní případové studie, které zahrnují dvanácté a třinácté století: Baziliku v Saint-Denis a Katedrálu v Lincolnu. U obou se soustředí na umění vitráží, které bylo revolučním médiem stírajícím hranice mezi barvou, materialitou a světlem. Tento bohatě ilustrovaný svazek reflektuje středověkou estetiku, v níž hrála barva zcela zásadní a převratnou roli na pomezí estetických, intelektuálních a teologických otázek. ER -
