Abstract

Morální charakter (éthos) je velmi starý koncept, jehož filozofické kontury, stejně jako jeho propojení s dovršením lidského života, nacházíme v antice. Patrně i dílem šťastné náhody je s tímto konceptem spojován v první řadě Aristotelés, žák Platóna, a jeho etické spisy. Autor knihy vychází z přesvědčení, že toto etické učení je opomíjeným klenotem naší civilizace, a všímá si současných interdisciplinárních snah o jeho oživení skrze aktualizaci právě konceptu morálního charakteru. Autorovým záměrem je tyto snahy kriticky posoudit, tedy zvážit, zda se nevzdalují svému cíli, a zároveň je systematizovat. Za stěžejní považuje podkapitolu vymezující funkci Aristotelovy etické nauky a celou třetí kapitolu, jež definuje pět kritérií adekvátní aktualizace. Druhá kapitola představuje základ pro následující úvahy, analyzující pojmy Aristotelovy etické nauky a jejich vzájemné vztahy. Kritickému posouzení konkrétních návrhů k aktualizaci a zejména prominentní analogii dovednosti (skill analogy) se věnuje kapitola čtvrtá. V poslední kapitole pak autor vytváří typologii aktualizací a předkládá vlastní náčrt k aktualizaci morálního charakteru. Kniha je zamýšlena pro mírně pokročilé v oblasti morální filozofie. Zároveň však obsahuje dostatek příkladů a odkazů a jednotlivé argumentační kroky jsou vysvětleny s takovou pečlivostí, aby byl spis přístupný každému trpělivému čtenáři.

Abstract (in English)

Moral character (ethos) is a very old concept whose philosophical contours, as well as its connection with the completion of human life, are found in antiquity. Probably by happy coincidence, Aristotle, a disciple of Plato, and his ethical writings are primarily associated with this concept. The author of this book starts from the conviction that this ethical doctrine is a neglected jewel of our civilization and notes the current interdisciplinary efforts to revive it through the actualization of the very concept of moral character. The author's intention is to critically assess these efforts, that is, to consider whether they are not losing their purpose, and at the same time to systematize them. He regards as central the subsection defining the function of Aristotle's ethical doctrine and the entire third chapter, which defines five criteria for adequate actualization. The second chapter provides the basis for the following considerations, analyzing the concepts of Aristotle's ethical doctrine and their interrelations. A critical examination of specific proposals for updating, and in particular the prominent skill analogy, is the focus of chapter four. Then, in the last chapter, the author develops a typology of actualizations and presents his own outline for moral actualization. The book is intended for those moderately advanced in moral philosophy. At the same time, however, it contains ample examples and references, and the various argumentative steps are explained with enough care to make the writing accessible to any patient reader.
