Abstract
The lecture, which took place in the framework of the Medieval Seminar at the University of Helsinki, focused on the circumstances of the discovery of the floor mosaics of the so-called Theodore's Complex in Aquileia at the end of the nineteenth century and the events of the First World War, which resulted in a change of local administration in the city. The art-historical and archaeological studies published between 1858 and 1920 were thus seen in the context of this changing socio-political situation: first Aquileia was seen as one of the most important Roman monuments of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, later as a city rightfully returned to the Kingdom of Italy.
