TY - CONF ID - 2354959 AU - Stehlíková, Karolína PY - 2023 TI - Eyes of an Octopus: The healing potential of graphic novels depicting trauma KW - nordic graphic novels KW - trauma UR - https://www.css.lu.se/iass/iass-2023-tromsoe/ N2 - In recent years, Scandinavian graphic novels have been exploring issues of mental health, particularly in relation to depression, anxiety and trauma. These works often explore difficult topics such as the effects of abuse, violence and loss. The author aims to present the way of depicting mental traumas in selected Scandinavian graphic novels for adults (Lene Ask, Anja Dahl Øverbye, Allan Hansen) and to explore their healing potential. Based on the theory shared by the authors of the book Languages of Trauma: History, Memory and Media (University of Toronto Press, 2021), namely that the media mirror, construct or challenge subjective traumatic memories and are able to transform and allegorize the past of the traumatized by re-enactment, re-animation or activation of traumatizing situations, the author seeks to answer the following questions: Is the graphic novel a suitable medium to present trauma? Do the selected works offer any form of catharsis? ER -
