Abstract

Příběh jižního Kavkazu je příběhem mostu mezi Evropou a Asií. Arménie a Gruzie – dvě nejstarší známé křesťanské kultury – a jejich sdílená středověká minulost během staletí vzkvétaly zasazené do úchvatné krajiny mezi Kaspickým a Černým mořem. Jde o jedny z nejpozoruhodnějších kultur v dějinách lidstva: na křižovatce východního křesťanského a íránského světa se minimálně od sedmého do třináctého století rodily umělecké projevy, které v sobě nemají nic provinčního a svou kvalitou a rozmanitostí často převyšují produkci staré Evropy. Toto bohatství nachází své kořeny v rozdělené a současně sdílené arménské a gruzínské historii, neboť po celé období středověku se oba národy nepřestaly stýkat. Hovořit však o regionu jako o „soudržném“ celku je oprávněné pouze tehdy, je-li tato soudržnost postavena na ontologické rozmanitosti: arménská a gruzínská kultura a umění jsou naprosto jedinečné, stejně jako oba jazyky a příslušné abecedy. Kniha je pokusem přepsat do řeči obrazů to, co bylo popsáno výše: mimořádný dialog mezi přírodou a kulturou, velkou kulturní rozmanitost a zároveň symbiózu mezi různými historickými skutečnostmi středověku.

Abstract (in English)

The story of the South Caucasus is the story of the bridge between Europe and Asia. Armenia and Georgia - two of the oldest known Christian cultures - and their shared medieval past have flourished over the centuries, set in a breathtaking landscape between the Caspian and Black Seas. These are some of the most remarkable cultures in human history: at the crossroads of the Eastern Christian and Iranian worlds, from at least the seventh to the thirteenth century, artistic expressions were born here that have nothing provincial about them and often surpass the production of old Europe in quality and diversity. This richness finds its roots in the divided and at the same time shared Armenian and Georgian history, for throughout the medieval period the two cultures did not cease to interact. However, it is only justified to speak of the region as a 'cohesive' whole if this coherence is based on ontological diversity: Armenian and Georgian culture and art are completely unique, as are the two languages and their respective alphabets. This book is an attempt to transcribe into the language of images what has been described above: the extraordinary dialogue between nature and culture, the great cultural diversity and at the same time the symbiosis between the different historical realities of the Middle Ages.
