Abstract
The paper was discussing life and work of scholar Jiří Veltruský and his twofold professional life in exile, which is divided between work for Independent Trade Unions and policital activist writing (under pseudonym Pau Barton) and publishing semiotics paper (under name Jiří Veltruský). The paper opens up question of contextualising Veltruský’s/Barton’s life and work. He operated within two very different exile communities: on the one hand, the Czechoslovak Social Democrats and trade unions members, while on the other, the Czechoslovak scholars of Structuralism (mainly former students of Mukařovský). Veltruský’s persona and his life story defy an easy summary and serve as a good testing point for analysing different strategies of activists and of academics in exile.
