Abstract

V originále

Článek se zabývá především pohledem na fenomén utrpení, který najdeme v díle amerického teologa a veřejného intelektuála Lorenza Albaceteho.

In English

Through the analysis of the late Lorenzo Albacete’s thought about the experience of suffering, the article tries to go to the core of this crucial human phenomenon. Albacete was an American theologian, who was more admired as a gifted communicator of the faith in the American society than an academic scholar. However, as his posthumous writings clearly show, during all his life, he had thoroughly meditated on the meaning of suffering and his reflections reached an extraordinary depth. Firstly, the article shows the main trials that reverberated throughout the course of his life. Then, it analyses the distinction between pain and suffering to show that the latter is a mystery to be lived rather than a problem to be solved. It shows that suffering creates a unique solidarity of those who co-suffer together. Albacete’s dialogue with great novelists such as Dostoevsky, Flannery O’Connor and Walker Percy is also sketched. This finally leads me to the conceptualisation of the uniqueness of Christian response to the problem of suffering.
