Abstract
Both Czech and Polish historians have paid considerable attention to the eighteenth-century coronations of Marian images, grand ritual and ceremonial acts realized according to the seventeenth-century Roman model. As some of the greatest festivities of that time, these have been interpreted both as an expression of the religious and artistic culture of the Baroque and as demonstrations of the power and prestige of the elites. The author of this study argues that such a perspective obscures different types of representation at different levels and stages for which these public events provided a suitable space. Focusing on several acts, procedures, and activities – processions, administration of sacraments, celebratory speeches and sermons, creating the history of sacred images and pilgrimage sites – the paper shows the important position of the local clergy as the events took place in a local context, in a specific social and cultural space.
