Milý příteli! , oslovuje německý teolog a filozof Romano Guardini svého přítele Josefa Weigera i všechny budoucí čtenáře svých Dopisů od jezera Como. Intimní formu dopisů využil pro sdílení svých hlubokých filozofických úvah o údělu člověka, jenž ve prospěch techniky ztrácí kontrolu nad svým bytím i životním prostředím. Jako bystrý pozorovatel popsal Guardini téměř před sto lety s až znepokojivou prozíravostí výzvy, které lidstvov technologickém věku čekají. K vášnivým čtenářům Dopisů i dalších knih Romana Guardiniho patřil německý architekt Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, tvůrce brněnské vily Tugendhat. Mies se už od mladí velmi zajímal o dění v přírodních i humanitních vědách. Svou tvorbu pak chápal jako vyjádření hlavních dobových tendencí. Stavební umění „je vždy v prostoru zachycená vůle doby, nic jiného“, napsal v roce 1924. Právě Dopisy od jezera Como mu otázku o vůli doby a jejích tendencích pomohly objasnit.

Dear friend! is how the German theologian and philosopher Romano Guardini addresses his friend Joseph Weiger and all future readers of his Letters from Lake Como. He used the intimate form of letters to share his profound philosophical reflections on the destiny of man, who is losing control of himself and his environment to technology. As an astute observer, Guardini described with disturbing prescience almost a century ago the challenges facing humanity in the technological age. Among the avid readers of The Letters and other books by Roman Guardini was the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, designer of the Tugendhat Villa in Brno. From a young age, Mies was very interested in the natural sciences and humanities. He understood his work as an expression of the main tendencies of the time. Building art "is always the will of the times captured in space, nothing else", he wrote in 1924. It was Letters from Lake Como that helped him clarify the question of the will of the times and its tendencies.
