Abstract

In his study, Marxists, Pseudo-Marxists and Neo-Marxists in Czech Archaeology, Jiří Macháček considers the various manifestations of Marxist influence on archaeological interpretation. In addition, he outlines five distinct phases: the pre-Marxist era up to 1948; the initial period of confused or naive pseudo-Marxism (as exemplified by J. Böhm and others): 1948–1968; the normalization period of conformist pseudo-Marxism (as exemplified by B. Chropovský and others): 1969–1989: the isolated appearance of authentic ("methodological") Marxists (E. Neustupný, V. Nekuda, P. Charvát); 1961–1989: the post-Marxist and Neo-Marxist period; since 1989. In general, based on his own experience and considerations, he states that Marxism in many ways conforms to the archaeological approach of examining the past. This is because materialism is embedded in the very foundations of archaeological thought, which views human society through artefacts. Consequently, he believes that it is mainly for these reasons that archaeology cannot remain resistant to Marxism.

Jiří Macháček se ve své studii Marxisté, pseudomarxisté a neomarxisté v české archeologii zabývá vlivem marxismu na archeologickou vědu. Kromě toho vytyčuje pět vývojových fází: předmarxistickou éru do roku 1948; počáteční období zmateného či naivního pseudomarxismu (na příkladu J. Böhma a dalších): 1948-1968; normalizační období konformního pseudomarxismu (na příkladu B. Chropovského a dalších); 1961-1989: ojedinělé vystoupení autentických ("metodologických") marxistů (E. Neustupný, V. Nekuda, P. Charvát), období postmarxismu a neomarxismu: od roku 1989. Obecně na základě vlastních zkušeností a úvah konstatuje, že marxismus v mnohém odpovídá archeologickému přístupu zkoumání minulosti. Je tomu tak proto, že materialismus je zakotven v samotných základech archeologického myšlení, které nahlíží na lidskou společnost prostřednictvím artefaktů. V důsledku toho se domnívá, že především z těchto důvodů nemůže archeologie zůstat vůči marxismu rezistentní.
