Die Welt der Bilder, die uns umgibt, ist durchsetzt mit unzähligen hinterleuchteten digitalen Bildern, die aus Millionen von Pixeln bestehen. Für das bloße Auge unsichtbar, werden sie erst erkennbar, wenn sie stark vergrößert oder anderweitig verändert und angepasst werden. Die Grundeinheit, aus der ein digitales Bild besteht, das Pixel - ein kleines Quadrat, das umso kleiner ist, je definierter das Bild ist - ist tief in der populären Vorstellung der Gegenwart verankert, zum Beispiel durch die so genannte Pixelkunst. Sowohl aus Nostalgie als auch wegen ihres charakteristischen Stils hat sich diese Methode der Bildgestaltung als digitale Kunstform etabliert. Zusammengesetzt aus kleineren Einheiten, die ein größeres Bild ergeben, unterliegen diese digitalen Bilder den Kompositionsprinzipien der Fragmentierung und Dekonstruktion, Prinzipien, die - vielleicht überraschend - schon vor fünfzehn Jahrhunderten in der bildenden Kunst und sogar in der Literatur ähnliche Anwendungen fanden.

The world of images that surrounds us is interspersed with countless backlit digital images consisting of millions of pixels. Invisible to the naked eye, they only become recognisable when they are greatly enlarged or otherwise altered and adjusted. The basic unit that makes up a digital image, the pixel - a small square that is smaller the more defined the image is - is deeply anchored in the popular imagination of the present, for example through so-called pixel art. Both out of nostalgia and because of its characteristic style, this method of image creation has established itself as a digital art form. Composed of smaller units that make up a larger image, these digital images are subject to the compositional principles of fragmentation and deconstruction, principles that - perhaps surprisingly - found similar applications in the visual arts and even in literature fifteen centuries ago.
