Z hlediska gramatiky je „proč“ zájmenné příslovce, z hlediska teleolo gie jde o základní slovo filozofie a estetiky. Uvědomil jsem si to nedávno. V termi nologickém semináři jsem se stařeckou lehkovážností zmínil jako samozřejmost, že Sofiině volbě Williama Styrona dvanáctiletý čtenář nemůže porozumět. K mému překvapení se jedna zahraniční studentka zeptala: „A proč ne?“ Král je nahý! V té sofistikovaně prosté otázce se skrývá jeden z klíčů k estetice: ta by měla nabídnout vysvětlení, jaké podmínky musí být splněny, abychom porozuměli umění. Cílem následující eseje je pokusit se nabídnout a zdůvodnit tvrzení, že pro vysokou literaturu jsou charakteristické takové popisy existenciálních událostí, pro jejichž interpretace nemáme standardní lexikon estetických pojmů.

From the point of view of grammar, "why" is a pronominal adverb; from the point of view of teleology, it is the basic word of philosophy and aesthetics. I realized this recently. In a terminology seminar, I mentioned, with the levity of an old man, that Sophie's choice of William Styron could not be understood by a twelve-year-old reader. To my surprise, a foreign student asked: "Why not?" The King is naked! In that sophisticatedly simple question lies one of the keys to aesthetics: it should offer an explanation of what conditions must be met to understand art. The aim of the following essay is to try to offer and justify the claim that high literature is characterized by descriptions of existential events for whose interpretation we have no standard lexicon of aesthetic terms.
