Abstract
In the original language
The rapid technological, artistic, cultural, and philosophical transformations that society has undergone in recent years have significantly influenced contemporary magical practices. Among the various traditions, practitioners of diverse magical schools—most notably Chaos Magick—have engaged in innovative experimentation by incorporating modern elements into their ritual practices. These modern influences include, but are not limited to, popular culture, experimental theatre, electronic music, and even internet memes. Such integrations exemplify how contemporary magic is continuously evolving in response to cultural and technological developments. Despite the syncretic and metamodern objectives of Chaos Magick, these experimental approaches have often been met with skepticism and outright hostility, not only from more traditional practitioners but also from fellow "Chaotes”. Critics argue that these methods are impractical or even serve as a form of mockery, thus provoking considerable debate regarding the rationality and legitimacy of ritual design. Such discourse raises significant questions about the validity of these innovations within magical practice. Conversely, advocates of this approach defend the emotional resonance, aesthetic value, and narrative appeal of these modern elements, claiming that they enhance the efficacy of rituals. In this presentation, drawing from my research, I will examine several case studies that illustrate these new approaches in contemporary ritual design. Additionally, I will explore the challenges faced by practitioners, as well as the critiques they encounter concerning the perceived irrationality of their practices within the broader magical community.
