Abstract
The synthesis of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is an inevitable condition for the peripheral nerve regeneration. We investigated several components of the ECM (fibronectin, collagen IV, thrombospondin, chondroitin sulfate, and vitronectin) by the indirect immunohistochemical method in cryostat cross sections through nerve regenerates obtained from 6 adult female rats. The regenerate rejoined the proximal and distal stumps of the transected sciatic nerve that had been inserted into the guide prepared from the knitted vascular prosthesis. After 6 weeks from the transection, the regenerate consisted of a band of axons arranged in fascicles running along the longitudinal axis of the prosthesis. Our immunohistochemical results suggest that the ECM produced in the knitted vascular tube provides a milieu suitable for nerve regeneration.
