Abstract
The presence of S-layers detected since 1996 on 18 strains of Cyanobacteria is summarized in this paper. The majority of S-layers were characterized in detail by light diffraction analysis and/or computer FOURIER transform. S-layers from two newly detected and three previosly reported S-layer positive strains were isolated, negatively stained and subjected to 2-D reconstruction. A tetragonal S-layer was found on cells of a Cyanobacterium cedrorum strain LEFEVRE 1963/M 137-1a, with center-to center spacing of 7.7 nm. S-layers detected on strains of Cyanobium, Synechocystis, Woronichinia and Microcystis were of p6 lattice symmetry with spacings ranging from 10.5 to 22.2 nm. The morphology of S-layer subunits of two strains of Synechocystis aquatilis, just as strains of S. cf. salina, Aphanocapsa rivularis and Microcystis aeruginosa was unique for each, differing in pore diameter and dimensions of the central region, as well as in pores and structure of subunit periphery
