The present paper is a study of the intonation of English and Czech declarative and interrogative sentences. It presents the results of a comparative analysis of the occurrence of different pitch patterns in two English and two Czech dialogues. The prosodic interpretation of the material is based on a simplified version of the framework of the British contour analysis. Czech texts display a higher percentage of rising tones than English texts, especially in wh-questions and in non-terminal intonation units of declarative sentences.

Článek je studií intonace v anglických a českých oznamovacích větách a otázkách. Podává výsledky analýzy intonačních vzorců ve dvou anglických a dvou českých dialozích. Interpretace prozodických rysů je založena na zjednodušené verzi tzv. britské "contour analysis". V českých textech se vyskytuje vyšší procento stoupavých tónů, než v textech anglických, zejména v doplňovacích otázkách a v nekoncových intonačních jednotkách oznamovacích vět.
