Abstract (in English) |

Drawing on the concept of the total institution, I examine the prison as a strongly gendered institution. I use Sandra Hardings framework of the gender system to explore how prisons reproduce and reinforce gendered identities among inmates and prison staff. How does the gender system of the larger society translate into male and female prison subcultures? Homosexual partnerships and the division of roles they produce, as well as pseudofamilies are analyzed to show how heterosexual relationship patterns operate independently of biological sex. These patterns can be found in both mens and womens prison settings, which indicates the reproduction of more than ontological entities. I conclude that the micro-interactional world of the prison reflects the socially constructed hierarchical role division of the macro-structural level. |
