The author of this article Jaroslav Hroch takes attention to the important influence of German hermeneutically oriented philosophy (M. Heidegger, H.-G. Gadamer, J. Habermas) to American neo-pragmatism (H. Bloom, R. Rorty). In the view of J. Hroch Richard Rortys pragmatic philosophy and Gadamers hermeneutics find their common feature in the dialogical conception of understanding, as well as in the sense for solidarity, historical attitude to social reality and in emphasizing the practical dimension of philosophy. In the article is also shown that the conception of Selbst (Self) in Jungian depth hermeneutics has been immensely influenced by W. Jamess theory of religious experience and his idea of "wider self" through which the saving experiences come. In this context the author of this article points to the emphasis on self-improvement, identity and moral self-development of the human personality in the ethical theories of Jamess followers (J. Dewey, H. Bloom, S. Cavell).
