Abstract
The usual criteria for measuring animal welfare in zoos are physical health, long life and reproduction. The paper looks at these criteria and finds them unsufficient. Additional criteria such as natural and abnormal behaviour, freedom and choice and dignity should play a role in analyzing zoo animal welfare.
