60 patients with acute exacerbation of COPD were treated either with conservative approach (branch A) or using non-invasive ventilatory support (branch B) - 30 pts in each branch. Inclusion criteria were matched for each branch. On comparison, NIVP decreased the need for invasive ventilation and curtailed the period spent on ICU. However, there was no difference in survival.
