O molekulárních mechanismech exprese MT je známo velmi málo a pravděpodobně se jí účastní samotný kov vazbou na transkripční faktor MTF-1. Nedávné výzkumy ukazují na významný vztah koncentrace MT ke karcinogenezi, mutagenezi a teratogennům. MT je znám jako prognostický marker u řady druhů rakoviny a má negativní vztah k protirakovinovým léčivům. Mezi široce rozšířené protirakovinovým léčivem je cisplatina. Cisplatina je léčivo používané více jako 40 let, které se preferenčně váže guanin v molekule DNA. Buňka rozpozná vzniklý adukut a snaží se ho reparačními mechanismy opravit. Nárůst kovu v organismu vede ke zvýšení exprese MT, a léčebný efekt se tím výrazně snižuje. Možností jak se těmto nežádoucím efektům bránit je použití antisense mRNA, genové terapie, proteázy či aplikace dalších kovů. Nezbytnou podmínkou studia chování biologických molekul jsou dobře zvládnuté analytické metody. Metodami pro stanovení MT jsou kromě elektroforézy, chromatografie, také elektrochemie, hmotnoství spektrometrie a další. ER -
