Abstract |
---|
Photodegradation of selected organic pollutants, 2,2- bis(4-chlorobiphenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane (p,p-DDT), 4-chlorobiphenyl (PCB 3), 2,4-dichlorobiphenyl (PCB 7), 4,4-dichlorobiphenyl (PCB 15), and 2,2,4,4,5,5-hexachlorobiphenyl (PCB 153), adsorbed on the surface of spruce (Picea abies) needles was investigated. The scope and dynamics of the reactions as well as identification of several photoproducts are discussed. A portion of the starting material decomposed into high-mass compounds, presumably the adducts with wax long-chain molecules, while the remaining molecules stayed photochemically stable. It is concluded that organic pollutants are photodegradable on the surface of plants and estimation of the conversion limitations may become a key information in environmental monitoring studies. |
