TY - CONF ID - 575324 AU - Sochová, Ivana - Hofman, Jakub - Holoubek, Ivan PY - 2005 TI - Effects of aza-PAHs to soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans SN - 8021037997 KW - C. elegans KW - soil contamination KW - azaPAHs N2 - Nematodes are very abundant and fundamental group of soil organisms. They are important for soil quality. Many properties of nematodes suggest them as suitable bioindicators of soil conditions and as organisms for toxicity testing. Nematode numbers and community structure are sensitive to stress, which is caused by soil pollutants and ecological disturbance. Nematodes, which are used for laboratory toxicity tests are comparably sensitive to other soil species. Moreover, they are often referred as less demanding to place and time. In our study, four aza-PAHs acridine, phenazine, quinoline and 1,10-phenanthroline - were tested. Aza-PAHs are N-heterocycles, they have some atoms of hydrogen in benzene nucleus replaced for nitrogen atoms. These matters are products of incomplete combustion of organic compounds containing nitrogen in presence of NOx. Some are known as mutagens and carcinogens. Their ecotoxicological properties are assessed only for few aquatic species and plants . Tests were performed in soil and aquatic media. This is first example of results from broaden project focused on toxicity characterization of many POPs to soil nematodes. ER -
