This invention relates to method for production of optically active haloalkanes, haloalcohols, alcohols, halopolyols and polyols by hydrolytic dehalogenation catalysed by the enzymes haloalkane dehalogenases (Enzyme Commission number EC 3.8.1.5) isolated from microorganisms or altered haloalkane dehalogenases with improved substrate specificity, stereo- or regio-selectivity.
