Abstract
Many routine techniques are employed in analysis of ceramics. Classical methods using dissolution and succesive solution analysis are time-consuming and destructive. Furthermore, the digestion of ceramic samples is often incomplete. Therefore other analytical techniques are employed that make it possible to eliminate dissolution procedures. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (LA-ICP-AES) was used for the analysis of ceramic tiles which represent two- or three-layer structures. It was found that laser ablation ICP-AES and other laser ablation based techniques (e.g. LIBS laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) could be helpful in ceramic technology as a tool for depth profile analysis. These methods are free from complicated sample preparation and handling procedures; they are faster; more effective and non-destructive; only low amount of sample is taken. Due to these advantages the laser techniques can be useful in archaeology and art as a convenient tool not only for ceramic samples. Because archaeological ceramic objects have a high historical value, it is impossible to destroy them by digestion. On the other hand information about composition is demanded for better understanding of relations in the past.
