The Czech Republic is coming to period when it could not profit from its competitive advantage based on low costs. If Czech enterprises want to be successful in strong foreign competition they will have to focus on improving quality of their products and services and on setting up new innovations. It is the main reason why in the Czech Republic is put the bigger and bigger accent on support of innovations. Number of conceptual strategic documents on national and regional level has been approved. This article gives the summary of documents that make a framework of Czech innovation policy. It analyses them and evaluates success of their realisation in practice (how they are realised and on what quality level). The role and the structure of implementing institutions is emphasised too. Thereinafter, Czech innovation performance and strengths and weaknesses of innovation environment are evaluated. The major part of the contribution is engaged in characteristic and assessment of programmes for support of innovation development in SMEs. Their focus is analysed and their benefits are discussed. The objects of research are: how are this programmes implemented, which subjects use them, into which sectors and regions subsidies come. The attention is also paid to decision which projects should be supported and which not. In other words, it is sought what criteria the applicants have to fulfil for subsidy obtaining, respectively why are some of them successful and others not. The article is completed with case studies. There are - on selected programme of innovation support - micro and macroeconomic benefits resulting from its implementation discussed and evaluated with the emphasis on growing of competitiveness of enterprises, regions and national economy.
