Jako ilustraci předpokládané modulární struktury muzického systému mozku autoři prezentují několik případů fokálních mozkových lézí, které se manifestovaly selektivními deficity či naopak ušetřením muzických funkcí. Při testování byla použita vlastní standardizovaná testovací baterie validovaná v normální populaci. U prvního případu byl dokumentován selektivní deficit hudební produkce (zpěvu písní) se zachováním verbální (textové) složky i prozodie, s neporušenou časovou analýzou hudby (rytmu a metra), a to při lézi pravé temporální oblasti nedominantní hemisféry. U druhého případu byl zaznamenán selektivní deficit melodické percepce v oblasti analýzy tónů (interval) a rytmu (označovaných také jako lokální analytické mechanismy) se zachovanou analýzou melodické kontury a metra. Léze byla neočekávaně lokalizována frontoparietálně v pravé (nedominantní) hemisféře u nehudebníka. U třetího případu s frontotemporální lézí levé (dominantní) hemisféry manifestující se globální afázií v chronické fázi s nonfluentní spontánní řečovou schopností došlo k selektivnímu uchování melodické produkce včetně fluentní verbální (textové) složky. Opačná disociace byla pozorována u čtvrtého případu s obdobnou fokální lézí levé (dominantní) hemisféry v temporoinzulární oblasti s anomickou afázií v chronické fázi se spontánní plynulou řečovou produkcí, avšak přetrvávajícím těžkým deficitem ve schopnosti produkce dříve známých písňových textů. Jsou diskutovány různé klinické vzorce amuzií ve vztahu k současným teoriím a koncepcím struktury a funkce muzického systému mozku. ER -
