Abstract

Text pojednává o koncepci občanského začleňování Jeffreyho Alexandera v kontextu klasické sociologické tradice reprezentované Karlem Marxem a Talcottem Parsonsem. Upozorňuje na proměnlivý historický kontext, v němž jednotlivé koncepty vznikaly a všímá si kontinuit i diskontinuit mezi jednotlivými autory. Oceňuje některé konceptuální posuny v Alexanderově teoretickém vývoji a zároveň kriticky pojednává o některých analytických omezeních jeho pozdější pozice.

Abstract (in English)

The article places Jeffrey C. Alexander s theory of civic incorporation into the context of classical sociological tradition, represented here by Karl Marx (On Jewish Question) and Talcott Parsons (the concept of societal community). Reflecting upon the changing historical circumstances from early to late modernity, in which these three concepts emerged, it assesses Marx s and Parson s contributions as both inspirational sources for the theoretical position held by Alexander and conceptual and normative platforms from which he critically departs. With this background, the article: 1) appreciates analytical advantages of some conceptual shifts in Alexander s transition from his early position to his more recent culturalist approach, 2) points to some analytical limitations of his later position, related especially to normative priority accorded to “universalizing multiculturalism” as a generally preferable mode of civic incorporation.
