It compares the morphological and semantic features of diminutives in the two languages and outlines tendencies in translating diminutive meaning from and into the two languages. The classification of diminutives as diminutives proper, frozen diminutives, and semi-frozen diminutives, based on semantic and stylistic criteria, makes it possible to distinguish between functioning diminutives and lexicalized forms which have no or only a limited diminutive meaning. The analysis confirmed a very high frequency of the use of diminutives in Czech in comparison with English. The source texts do not seem to have affected the target texts in this respect: in terms of the frequency of diminutives, translations into Czech do not differ significantly from original Czech texts, and translations into English do not differ from original English texts.
