Woolf and Plath both experienced depression during their lives and were hospitalized in mental institutions, but there were also differences in the risks and in the protective factors in their lives which, taken together, led them both to the final choice of voluntary death at the age of 30 in the case of Plath and at the age of 59 in the case of Woolf. Literary works and inner conflicts of these authors are not taken into consideration in this paper; rather, an attempt will be made to look into the biographical data in order to compare the risk and protective factors for their suicides.
